A Grant Program Announced for Farmers Markets
A grant program has recently been announced to support public farmers markets, individual farmers markets, and state and regional farmers market organizations, especially in low to moderate income communities.
The program called “Diversifying Public Markets and Farmers Markets” has approximately $1 million in funding to award in grants in three categories. In the first category, approximately five grants will be awarded to networks of farmers’ markets and/or public markets with a grant pool of approximately $475,000. This category of grants only is open to both U.S.-based non-profits and Canadian-based registered Provincial non-profit societies. The second category is 10 to 15 mini-grants for individual farmers’ markets from a grant pool of $150,000 to $200,000. The final category is for 4 to 6 grants to state and regional farmers’ markets association from a pool of $300,000 to $350,000. The second and third categories of grants are open only to U.S.-based applicants.
A “Request for Pre-proposals” (RFP) for the program was released October 17, 2005 with a deadline of November 14, 2005. Details of the program and RFP requirements are available on-line at http://www.pps.org/markets/regranting/rfp_2006.
