The Farmer’s Slice of Pie
By: Rob Holland
February 2000

How much money does the farmer get from each dollar that you spend on food?

Here are your multiple choices: a) 90 cents, b) 75 cents, c) 50 cents d) none of the above.

“The answer is ‘d,’ none of the above,” said Rob Holland of The University of Tennessee's Agricultural Development Center.

“On the average,” he said, “the farmer gets less than 21 cents from each dollar spent on food in this country. For purchases at fast-food and other restaurants, the farmers’ portion slips even lower, to less than 11 cents.”
