We are
pleased to have cooperated with the Tennessee Department of
Agriculture Market Development Division in this “Preliminary
Evaluation of Concepts for Growing Leafy Vegetables Hydroponically
in Tennessee.” This report summarizes almost six months
of review, observation, discussion and analysis of numerous
concepts and practices of hydroponic greenhouse operation.
This type of preliminary evaluation of new and developing
production practices, market opportunities, and feasibility
is an essential initial step to the ultimate identification
and development of viable farm enterprises.
Dr. Alvin
Rutledge, professor emeritus of The University of Tennessee,
has done an excellent job establishing parameters for this
study; identifying, describing and defining alternative production
systems; considering market possibilities; prescribing broad
and specific production practices; and developing a straightforward
cost analysis. Dr. Rutledge provides and overview of the potential
of hydroponic lettuce production in Tennessee by comparing
specific practices of two different systems.
A special
thanks is extended to Dr. Rutledge for his many contributions
to this project as the principal investigator. Thanks is also
extended to Dr. Allen Straw, Dr. Dave Coffee, Dr. Charlie
Hall and Ms. Wanda Russell for their assistance in the review
process. Appreciation is extended to Mr. Stanley Trout, Mr.
Joe Gaines, Mr. Paul Nordstrom, Dr. Dan McLemore and Mr. Dan
Wheeler for their support and direction of this project.
