In July 2000, The University of Tennessee Vice President for Agriculture, Dr. Jack Britt, and The Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture, Mr. Dan Wheeler, appointed an Aquaculture Task Force. Among other responsibilities, the 12-member Task Force was asked to estimate the scope of the existing commercial aquaculture industry in the state.

This project was funded by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's "Ag Development Fund" and made possible from the sale of "Ag Tag" license plates.
